London Underground Mobile Coverage: Uninterrupted 4G/5G by end of 2025!

Map of London Underground stations with dice and game piece

Transport for London (TfL) spent most of last year rolling out uninterrupted 4G and 5G mobile coverage to all London underground station ticket halls, platforms, and tunnels on the Tube and Elizabeth line networks. This brought internet access to over 220 stations. Most areas will offer complete coverage by the end of 2025, estimated to encompass around 80-90% of stations as of September 2025.

This means that customers will be able to send and receive calls and texts, surf the web, or scroll through social media feeds without losing the connection when going from above ground to underground. The project also includes the Emergency Services Network (ESN) for first responders.

1. Jubilee Line Coverage

Train pulls into Jubilee line platform during the daytime

Since March 2020, commuters on the Jubilee Line have had the convenience of accessing 4G mobile connectivity. This service is operational in eight stations and connecting tunnels spanning from Westminster to Canning Town, with expansions from Swiss Cottage to Westminster ongoing in 2025.

2. Northern Line Coverage

The Northern Line has received a connectivity boost, with 4G and 5G-ready mobile coverage available at Tottenham Court Road Northern Line platforms and Northern Line stations between Archway and Euston, alongside Goodge Street station. Continuous coverage now extends from South Wimbledon to Stockwell, and further to Morden and Kennington as of summer 2025.

Furthermore, this service is also accessible in the tunnels connecting Tottenham Court Road (Charing Cross branch), Chalk Farm and Camden.

3. Central Line Coverage

Enhanced connectivity is now at the fingertips of Central Line travellers, as they can access both 4G and 5G-ready mobile coverage. This upgrade extends from Oxford Circus to Tottenham Court Road, while also covering the areas of Holland Park, Notting Hill Gate, and Queensway.

Additional Line Coverage Updates (as of September 2025)

  • Piccadilly Line: Extended to King’s Cross St. Pancras, Covent Garden, and sections from Piccadilly Circus to Hyde Park Corner.
  • Victoria Line: Coverage from Green Park to Euston/Brixton.
  • Bakerloo Line: Coverage started mid-2025, with central sections live.
  • Subsurface Lines (Circle, District, etc.): Progress ongoing, targeted for completion in late 2025.
  • Elizabeth Line: Full 4G at all stations and 5G in tunnels.
  • DLR and Overground: Tunnel coverage expansions in 2025.

Why is London Underground WiFi important?

In the digital age, we need to be connected. That is why having reliable coverage across London is a game-changer.

Not only can you keep up to date on what’s going on in the world above ground, but it can be a lifesaver if you get a little lost or need to send an urgent email. In this day and age, even ten minutes of downtime can spell disaster for a busy businessperson.

Before, customers lost connection and went offline when entering a station, cutting them off whilst on their journey. Now you are able to connect to the WiFi service when in ticket halls, walkways, and on the platform. This is across 250 stations, so you can keep in contact with clients and colleagues when on the move.

FAQs

How do I connect to TfL WiFi on the London Underground?

To connect, open your phone’s WiFi settings and select the network provided by your mobile operator (such as O2 Wifi Extra, EE Underground, VodafoneWiFi, or Virgin Media). Most smartphones will connect automatically if you’re an eligible customer with WiFi enabled and your account in good standing.

Why is my TfL WiFi not working?

If you’re having trouble connecting, make sure your WiFi is switched on, your software is up to date, and your mobile account is active. Pay-as-you-go users should ensure they’ve topped up within the last 30 days. If issues persist, forget the network and reconnect, or check your settings to use the correct authentication method (AKA or EAP-AKA).

How do I activate EE WiFi on the London Underground?

EE Pay Monthly customers can access Underground WiFi automatically unless their account is in arrears. Pay As You Go users need to have topped up at least £5 in the last 30 days. After topping up, it may take up to 48 hours before you gain access.

Is TfL WiFi available everywhere on the Underground?

WiFi coverage is available in ticket halls, corridors, and platforms across more than 250 Tube stations. However, connectivity is not available in tunnels or on trains. TfL and network partners are progressively expanding 4G and 5G coverage across lines to close these gaps.

Which mobile networks support TfL WiFi?

Major UK networks, including EE, O2, Vodafone, and Three, provide access to TfL’s Underground WiFi for eligible customers. Check your provider’s app or website for connection details and availability.

Can I use WiFi on the Elizabeth line or London Overground?

Yes. Public WiFi is available in Elizabeth line and Overground stations, and free onboard access is offered on above-ground sections using newer Class 710 trains. TfL is working with BAI Communications to expand service below ground soon.

Is TfL Tube WiFi safe?

London Underground Tube WiFi is generally secure, as it’s managed by Transport for London and trusted mobile providers. However, as with any public network, avoid accessing sensitive accounts or entering payment details while connected. For added safety, use a VPN and ensure websites use HTTPS encryption when browsing.

What’s next?

TfL will continue to deploy 5G infrastructure on the London Underground network, working with EE, O2, Vodafone, and Three. All providers plan to launch enhanced 5G services across the network in the near future, enabling faster streaming and AR apps underground.

One of TfL’s main goals is to extend Wi-Fi coverage to all areas of the London Underground network, including tunnels and platforms. TfL, alongside the Big Four, are also working to improve the capacity of the network to handle more users.

TfL engineers working to improve WiFi and mobile network connectivity across the London Underground

“There's still work to do before all stations have mobile coverage, including installing the infrastructure, building the connection points and testing systems. All of this will need to be done while continuing to run a busy underground transport system.”

Lastly, 5G remains a key technology that each mobile network operator is currently investing heavily into. This new generation of mobile network technology offers significantly faster speeds and lower latency than previous generations. Who else is excited to see a fully connected London Underground network by the end of 2025?
